Can Stress Be Good?

With Elliot & Stella

Can stress help you work harder?

Elliot - You know, people often talk about stress like it’s this terrible thing that should be avoided at all costs, but I actually think it can be motivating. When you’re under pressure, it kind of forces you to get things done, especially if there’s a deadline looming. Without that stress, I don’t think I’d get around to finishing anything.

Stella - I get what you're saying, but I don’t know if I completely agree. Stress might push you to finish things, but I’ve never been a fan of it. I think when I’m stressed, I just feel like everything’s out of control, and it makes the work feel worse. Like, sure, maybe I get stuff done, but it’s not enjoyable at all.

Yeah, I get that. It’s not fun, but I think it gets me focused. Like, when I’m under pressure, I cut out all distractions and just focus on getting things done.

Fair enough, but I think the pressure just makes me freeze sometimes. If it’s too much, I get so overwhelmed that I end up doing nothing at all.

Can stress make you mentally stronger?

I think stress can help you build mental strength. It’s like facing small challenges now so you’re better prepared for the bigger ones later. The more you deal with stress, the more you learn to handle it as you grow.

Hmm, I don’t know if I totally agree. Stress makes me feel drained. It’s like you’re pushing through, but I don’t feel any stronger afterward. If anything, it feels like it’s just taking a toll on me.

Maybe it has to do with the levels of stress you are under. I think the more you deal with it, the stronger you get. I used to struggle with stress a lot, but now I handle it way better. Like, at work, I get stressed all the time, but it helps me manage the pace.

I guess I see your point, but I don’t think stress makes me stronger. I think I just adapt. It doesn’t feel like growth—just survival.

Can stress cause you to make more mistakes?

Oh, for sure. When I’m stressed, I end up rushing through things, and that’s when mistakes happen. I’ll miss details, or even just forget things because my brain is too focused on the pressure.

Yeah, I totally agree. Stress can make everything feel chaotic, and it’s like you’re trying to do a million things at once, so you end up messing up. But, sometimes, it makes me more alert. If I’m stressed about something, I’ll double-check everything to make sure I don’t miss anything.

That’s a good point, but even with that, it’s like the stress makes me forget stuff. I’m too focused on the deadline, not the actual quality of the work.

Can too much stress be bad, even if it’s positive stress?

Absolutely. Like, positive stress, like preparing for an exam or getting ready for a presentation, can push you to do your best, but if it lasts too long, it starts to feel like too much. I think there’s definitely a point where stress stops being helpful.

Yeah, I’ve been there. When the stress goes on for too long, it’s not motivating anymore. It just becomes overwhelming, and then it feels like it’s doing more harm than good.

Exactly. It’s like a cycle. The longer the stress lasts, the harder it is to get out of it. You start to feel mentally drained, and that’s when it’s no longer helping.

Totally. That’s why it’s important to know when to stop. Pushing yourself can work, but only if you give yourself space to recover, too.

Can stress affect your sleep?

Oh, definitely. When I’m stressed, I can’t sleep properly. My brain just keeps racing, and no matter how tired I am, I can’t seem to turn it off. It’s like my body’s exhausted, but my mind won’t let me rest.

Yeah, I feel the same way. If I’ve got something stressing me out, I’ll be lying in bed thinking about it all night. It’s like my mind can’t stop, so I end up just staring at the ceiling. And the next day, I’m so tired, which just makes everything worse.

Exactly! And then, because you’re tired, you’re even more stressed the next day.

Can stress help you focus on tasks better?

I think it does. When I’m stressed, I tend to zone in on the task at hand. It’s like stress clears out all the other distractions and forces me to focus.

I get that, but for me, stress just makes everything feel more frantic. I can’t concentrate properly because I’m thinking about everything at once. It doesn’t help me focus—it just overwhelms me.

Yeah, I guess it depends on how you handle it. For me, stress gives me a sense of urgency, and that makes me focus. But I know for you, it sounds like it just makes things harder.

Should people try to avoid stress altogether?

I don’t think it’s possible to avoid stress completely. It’s part of life. But I do think it’s important to try to manage it, so it doesn’t take over. You can’t avoid stress entirely, but you can choose how you deal with it.

Exactly. Trying to avoid stress altogether would just make things worse. If you ignore it, it only builds up. It’s better to face it head-on and find ways to cope with it.

Yeah, I think it’s all about finding balance. Stress is going to come, but learning how to manage it is the key. Taking breaks, breathing, writing things down—whatever works for you.

Yep, you’ve got to deal with it. It’s not about running from stress—it’s about figuring out how to live with it.

How do you think you can manage stress better?

For me, I try to take breaks when I’m feeling overwhelmed. I’ll step away from whatever is stressing me out, even if it’s just for five minutes, and just breathe. I also find writing down everything on my mind really helps.

Yeah, I like the idea of writing it down. It helps me get everything out of my head. I’ve also found that talking it out with someone helps a lot, especially if it’s something I can’t solve by myself. Just sharing what’s on my mind takes a lot of pressure off.

I totally agree with that. Talking about it can make a huge difference. Sometimes, just knowing someone else understands makes you feel less alone with your stress.

Yeah, it’s a way of taking control of it instead of letting it control you. It’s all about finding strategies that work for you, whether that’s journaling, talking to someone, or just stepping away for a moment.
